I’m no Jessica Simpson fan but . . .
I wouldn’t say that Jessica Simpson’s music is my kind of music. Though, I will say she’s got a fabulous ass voice. *ahem*
News has been bubbling that Yahoo! has been dropping hints and toying around with the idea of selling non-broken DRM’d MP3 format songs on their Yahoo! Music store. So, as I’m scanning my feeds this morning, I was surprised to see that their first foray into this is one of Miss Simpson’s songs. I would have expected a less mainstream artist; or at least a more “indieish” appearing group to be used for this. However, I can see why Yahoo! would choose a big name. They’d like to see if star power can drive a two-dollar track. That’s right. A Public Affair is selling for $1.99 at Music.Yahoo.com.
Why a buck more than iTunes? Yahoo claims it’s got nothing to do with the unrestricted format of the file. Rather, they say it’s because the song can be customized to include the listener’s name. There are pages upon pages of names you can choose from. I don’t know if it’s a digitized robot voice or is Jessica sat for hours on end singing the baby-name-book into the mic. In any case, it’s a really smart form of alternate DRM. Who wants to copy their friend’s song if it has someone else’s name in it? Pretty nifty.
Even though I’m not a big fan, like I said, I’m going to buy the song just to show my support and drive the sales of this track. If this is a grand experiment, I’d like to see it succeed.
And, of course, to hear her say my name. ;)
